What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on investigating and targeting changes in the interactions of emotions, thoughts, and actions that are presenting cyclical problems and/or successes in the person’s life. CBT is an active approach based on well-established and research-supported scientific principles. The psychologist helps the individual in gaining an understanding of how and when their behaviors (thoughts, actions, sensations, and emotions) are present in order to intervene in the most effective way. This allows the person to better understand themselves, their environment, and then move toward acceptance of reality which helps facilitate change, growth, and mental wellness. The treatment is collaborative by nature and focused on teaching the client skills and strategies that can be used to improve and maintain a higher level of functioning. The psychologist works to provide a safe and compassionate environment for the individual their working with.

There are many types of treatments within the umbrella of CBT. Magda Rodriguez specializes in exposure-based treatments like Exposure Response Prevention for OCD or Specific Phobias and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
